Syau-Cheng Lai


Syau-Cheng Lai improvises and accompanies classes for the Cornell University Dance Program. Her solo piano projects include works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók, Morton Feldman, György Ligeti, Olivier Messiaen, Sergei Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovitch. She also plays chamber music works by Shostakovitch, Alfred Schnittke, Johannes Brahms and Ernest Bloch. She performed the entire piano masterpiece Vingt regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus by Olivier Messiaen at Barnes Hall, Cornell University, on December 11, 2004. Most recently she played Morton Feldman's For Bunita Marcus on February 3, 2007, at Barnes Hall. She is currently working on Beethoven's Opp. 109-111, Chopin's Op. 58, Ligeti's Etudes, Prokofiev's late piano sonatas, and Frederic Rzewski's The People United Will Never Be Defeated.

Her site-specific installation exhibit Visualizing for Bunita Marcus was on view at the Olive Tjaden Gallery on the Cornell campus Monday-Friday, February 5-9, 2007. Commentary on the exhibit and concert may be found through this page of links.
